2020 Freeze out

Early in the morning on January 25, a cranky crew of scouts headed up to Bolton for the annual Mayflower council freeze out. From the beginning, the spirit of competition was in the air. Activities started early on Saturday as some other troops stayed over Friday night. The first event was the fire-making challenge. As a perennial powerhouse, a third-place finish might indicate failure for troop 1 but the potential of the troop shines bright, with Daniel and Kyle able to complete the challenge without using matches, a difficult task for two chicken tendies. As the competitions continued two scouts found themselves particularly dominant in the two-man saw. Owen and Niall worked together and captured a first-place finish, the first of the day. The big O and the a-Niall-ator proved to be a force to be reckoned with. The theme of the day seemed to be the young prospects of the troop. In a new event, Daniel X, Kyle W and Dylan N beat all the other teams by over two minutes in “cross the creek”. The aggressive strategy proved to be helpful as the young scouts captured another blue ribbon for the troop. As the competitions boiled down, troops began to prepare themselves for the main event, the Klondike derby. The conditions were difficult this year, there was a 50/50 mix between wheels and skis on the lightly coated track. After a course tour, there was an executive decision to go with skis. This decision turned out to be a good one because troop one dominated the competition. Led by Daniel in the sled a variety of scouts overcame substitution mishaps and won the race with a time of 6:02 capturing first place on the main event. Overall, a successful day for the troop, and we are looking forward to defending our titles next winter.
